Mixing bits of funk, new wave and disco, Luscious Jackson packed the house Saturday at Chronas Cafe.
Audience members danced, crowd-surfed and hooted a backup chorus of "Oot! Oot!" throughout the New York band's set.
Luscious Jackson is often compared to the Beastie Bovs - its records are the first non-Beastie releases from the Boys' label, Grand Roval, an offshoot of Capitol Records - in that band members play their own instruments but throw in liberal doses of samples as well.
On Saturday, the four members of Luscious Jackson were joined by a DJ, but the focus was on a rock mix of guitar, bass, drums and keyboard.
Gabrielle Glaser and Jill Cunniff played guitar and bass respectively, switching for the final songs. Kate Schellenbach, who drummed in an early Beastie Boys lineup, held down the drum kit. Vivian Trimble played keyboard.
The sound was loose, confident and - except for the sole non-instrument spot - strong. A low point came when the band lined up to rap at the front of the stage, leaving the DJ to handle the music. Without the live instruments to define the groove, the mix suddenly turned to a speaker-destroying low-end sludge.
For the most part, though, Glaser kept up a wash of crisp guitar chords, Cunniff and Schellenbach worked the rhythms, and Trimble filled in the gaps with synth bleeps and electric piano chords.
Glaser and Cunniff supplied most of the band's vocals, with the other two joining on backups. There were a few raps, but most songs were sung as melodic wails.
Overall, the funk wasn't as heavy as what some practitioners throw down, but it was plenty to keep the sweaty dancers up front going.
The set drew heavily from the band's recent album, "Natural Ingredients."
