Large Professor

Matador Records

There are times when I cannot improve on a biography that has already been written. This is one of those times. So the majority of this Who's Who entry has been taken from the official Large Professor site.

A hip hop legend on Matador! Widely known for his work as a producer and MC with the pioneering NY/Toronto trio Main Source, Large Professor has since become a full-time producer, most recently for artists such as NAS, Masta Ace, and Busta Rhymes.

Large Professor originally became involved in hip hop when he won a tryout held by Main Source members K-Cut and Sir Scratch in 1989. An integral member of Main Source during their heyday, LP eventually broke with Main Source over creative differences. Following an abortive solo deal with Geffen in the mid-’90s, he has lent his hand to albums by some of rap’s biggest names, including Eric B & Rakim, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, A Tribe Called Quest and the others listed above.

A recent Large Professor release was a 12" on the Replay label, L.P. and Neek the Exotic doing "Ryme Mania ’99", with Masta Ace’s “NY Confidential” on the flip. “‘Bout That Time” is the second single in our Matador Hip Hop 12" Series.

Beastie Boys fans should be aware of the fact that Large Professor did one of the most memorable Sure Shot remixes back in 1994. If you don't own the Sure Shot single, than you also have the opportunity to listen to "Sure Shot Large Professor remix" on the Beastie Boys Video Anthology DVD.
