Country: United States City: New York Promoting: Language: English Features: MCA, Mike D, AdRock Notes: Backstage interview with Beastie Boys while on tour in Irvine, California Press: Business Wire August 10, 1992 MTV's "Choose or Lose Telethon: Vote Loud!" NEW YORK--MTV's "Choose or Lose Telethon: Vote Loud!" will air live on Aug. 15, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (ET). The event is the latest phase in MTV's "Choose or Lose" political awareness campaign and is aimed at encouraging young adults to register to vote in the 1992 presidential election. MTV VJ John Norris will anchor the telethon from the MTV studios where he will be joined by celebrity co-hosts Marky Mark, Dave Mustaine, MC Lyte and others. Unlike other telethons, the "Choose or Lose Telethon" is designed to raise awareness rather than funds. Throughout the telethon, MTV viewers will be asked to phone a special number to receive--rather than give--voter registration information for their state. MTV, in conjunction with The League of Women Voters and Rock The Vote, has prepared a comprehensive voter registration guide which will be sent out to all viewers who call in during the telethon. The guide provides details about how to register in each state, including registration deadlines, registration locations and more. The telethon will air live from the MTV studios in New York and will feature celebrity co-hosts and discussions with an in-studio audience and phone callers. There will also be celebrity testimonials, and live and pre-taped coverage, including a backstage interview with the Beastie Boys while on tour in Irvine, Calif., and reports from the Lollapalooza music festival. Judy McGrath, executive vice president, MTV, said, "The success of the 'Choose or Lose' campaign is a reflection of the exciting state of politics at this time. Our 90-minute forum with Bill Clinton was a dramatic example of how young people can be involved in the political process. This telethon is the inevitable follow up. We're going to use all our resources--celebrities, entertainment and air time--to bring politics to a young audience and present it on a level they can identify with. Our goal is entertainment and enlightenment." MTV's "Choose or Lose" campaign kicked off with coverage of the New Hampshire presidential primary. Most recently, "Choose or Lose" presented a 90-minute special, "Facing the Future with Bill Clinton," in which the Democratic candidate fielded questions from 200 18–24 year olds in Los Angeles. The campaign, which is designed to address issues that affect young people today and spark political interest and participation, has included on-air coverage of the primary elections, profiles of all the candidates and interviews with political experts. Upcoming plans include: coverage of the Democratic and Republican conventions; publication of the MTV 1992 Voter Registration Guide which provides registration information for all 50 states; voter registration booths at MTV concerts and events; and the continued donation of on-air time for Rock the Vote public service announcements. MTV's "Choose or Lose Telethon: Vote Loud!" is produced by Carol Donovan. Sherrie Kaye is associate producer. |
