The Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia (Mon, Sep 26, 1994) by Steve Dollar: Feeling Groovy: Buzz bands don't have to be as generous and fun as Luscious Jackson was Saturday night at Midtown Music Hall. Usually it's enough to show up, flesh out the images that college-age fans know from video and magazines, display some attitude and strum adequate guitar. But the group, four young women from New York and their disk jockey, was more interesting than its albums, which emulate hip-hop by using using rhythms and melodies of '70s funk and soul music, but add a white, female, urban perspec-tive. Fronted by guitarist-vocal-ists Gabby Glaser (mellow and conversational) and Jill Cunniff (more aggressive and confrontational), the band mined easy going grooves and sang about dealings with men, among other issues, in lyrics that seemed born of many dorm-room jam sessions. |
